I am a 31 year old Tradesman looking to move into cyber security. I’ve wanted to for a long while but didn’t have the resources or time and now I have a flexible work situation that would allow the time.

My question is. Where do all the self taught folks start? I have a small grasp on Python(in progress). Do I start with learning a language? Or should I be focusing my efforts elsewhere first?

And also if you were going to tell someone you were friends with in my situation how to get a job in this field, what would you tell them? Teach themselves? Go to a school? And if so what type of schooling aside from a bachelor’s degree would you suggest?

I apologize to anyone who is offended as I’m sure this is the 900th time this has been asked but I’d like to start my own line of comms with folks here with my own direct questions. Thank you in advance!

Hack the box or try hack me.. both websites have academies and full content.. the language is a good addition but definitely not enough. Let’s say it’s one out of ten fields you should be good at.. (not trying to discourage you)

I’m probably in the minority on this one but I think you should start with learning the ins and outs of a computer and hardware. You can go through Python, Java, and any other languages but if you can’t tell what a level 2 switch is what’s the point?
