Advise on Personal project I am working on

Hello guys,

I am entry level IT and I do like tinkering with stuff and learning how things work. Over the years I have accumulated many PC parts and built many cool custom pc’s.

Straight to the point. I like to have a computer for specific tasks/jobs. I have a school computer that I usually only use for college, a work computer that I only use for work, a gaming computer I only use for gaming, etc. I do this because I tend to mess around with my computers and I have corrupted and lost my data in many occasions. I finally learned my lesson to keep backups and have a test computer to mess around with and not use one computer for everything.

With this in mind I am currently building a computer with spare PC parts that I have laying around, It will have an i7, 16GB of RAM, graphics card(mostly for looks), 4 – 8TB of hard drive storage in a raid 5 configuration and an SSD 120Gb just for windows 10.

I want to be able to access this computer any where I have internet access. I know for the most part I can use TEAMVIEWER or remote desktop to access this computer. The limitation comes with RDP is that I cannot install programs since the screen just goes dark and you have to be physically present to press “install” and other similar issues.

Teamviewer you can restart, shut down, and do other things. then again I also do not want to pay for a TeamViewer license. Unless I absolutely have to.

My biggest issue is with security, I have a standard Xfinity router that faces the internet nothing else. I want to know if I can accomplish my goal of setting this computer up to be accessible through the internet SAFELY and with a budget. I do not want to set up an expensive local network at my house for just one computer. Should I scrap this plan and only access this computer locally?

I also do plan on turning the computer off when not in use by using a SMART Amazon Alexa power switch that turns off and on ( electric wall socket) with a press of a button (with my phone) that way if some one does try to get access to the PC they can not use wake on LAN to turn the computer on and snoop around.

What remote connection software do you recommend and can I even do this with out spending tons of money, but also keeping my computer safe.

This computer will mostly be a test system running local servers for classes I have and projects I do. Maybe if it’s safe enough I can even use about 100 GB for storage to keep school documents and projects there and get rid of my one drive monthly subscription.
