Are people skills essential for a career as a software engineer, or can introverts do fine in the job?
The industry is comprised of mostly introverts. That said, you need some people skills to succeed and have a career in a higher level position.
In the big picture? Yes. Landing a job, networking… The career stuff takes other people, and climbing corporate ladders tends to be an extroverts game (that ambiverts can sneak into), but technical prowess and merit do fine in the day to day for many years. Dealing with people is counterproductive to zoning into the code, after all.
