Been doing some research on security and network certifications.. thoughts on these ones?

I always hear about CISSP and CEH and a few others… I recently looked at CCIE Enterprise Infrastructure and CCEI Security.. (Both CISCO). What are the thoughts on these two? They seem top-level. Thoughts on Comptia Network+ and Security+ also?

* **CISSP**: Highly advanced cert. Requires 5 years experience. I have this one, and it was insanely difficult. Pay off is nice though, I only get six figure job offers now.

* **CEH**: I recommend this one if you want to impress non-IT people at a family bar-be-que by saying that you’re a *certified professional* ***hacker*** and get admired by your 14 year old nieces and nephews. Otherwise, I’d avoid it. It’s four times as expensive as the Security+ and has just about the same content. Despite the cool sounding name, doesn’t actually have anything to do with hacking.

* **CCIE EI & CCIE Security**: Can’t go wrong with Cisco certs, though I must say I don’t see these two too often in the US market. I know Cisco certs carry a lot of weight in foreign markets like India.

* **Network+**: Solid cert. Not as technical as the CCNA but it’s a solid cert that will get you from point A to point B in your career like an old Toyota Corolla.

* **Security+**: Honestly, there isn’t a situation where I can’t recommend the Security+. It’s not a particularly difficult or indepth certification, a beginner cert by all means, but it carries a ton of weight and is super versatile across a lot of different CyberSecurity specializations. Definitely needs to be an accolade you should have, quadruply so if you’re just starting your career.

* Network+ – Good intro network certificate. Network is important to security.
* Security+ – Good intro security (general) certificate.
* CEH – Advertises itself as red team, really more of a purple team memorization cert. Not that great. Really expensive. Common HR filter, but becoming less-so.
* CISSP – The most difficult general security cert, managerial focus. A mile wide, inch deep on tech and security topics.
* CCIE – I don’t want to say these are bad/rare certs but for *pure* cybersec people (not networking guys with a security focus) I’ve really not seen these. If you want to go for a heavy network focus, maybe it might be a good path?
* AZ-900 or AWS CCP – Not strictly networking, the cloud does interface with your network configuration, especially if an org embraces some sort of private link to a cloud provider. I’d advise considering one of the intro cloud certs, if only because cloud is becoming more and more something you’ll need to know about and interface with in most orgs.

As probably expected, CISSP and CEH are reasonably regarded and non-vendor-specific so perhaps more valuable in varied roles.

Cisco-specific are second best unless the place is a Cisco shop. Then quite useful.

CompTia are generally considered lower level than the others.
