BYOD, working from home, and Virtual Desktops: Endpoint Security Considerations?

My company is in the process of building out our VDI. The plan is to have employees use their own devices (win10 or MacOS) at home to access their Virtual Desktop for work. Pretty straight forward, but here’s the gotcha(s):

1. No endpoint security / control of any kind. Leadership doesn’t want to pay for full MDM. Also, it would be a mix of both OS.
2. Part of the Employee job involves Web conference calls. The software being used is ran within the VDI. These conversations may include sensitive information being discussed. Nothing is recorded.

Would it be reasonable to just stick with anti-virus/malware protection on the devices? or am I asking for trouble? Any advice?
