Can an antivirus detect backdoors or rootkits if it was disabled prior to intrusion?

Essentially, I’m talking about if someone physically disabled your antivirus on your device, then manually installed a backdoor, would your antivirus be able to detect it upon it’s reactivation? Would it be effectively hidden or does it depend on your antivirus solution?
Antivirus solution I’m currently talking about is Kaspersky Internet Security.

PS. I know this would involve a motive to make any sense anyway like if I’m a government official on thin ice or a person I know decided to fuck with me but I’m looking to see if antivirus solutions are effective on already intruded machines or if someone else decides to get paranoid and look this up they’d get an answer.
