Can the big tech companies lock down devices remotely? And can such a feature be used as a political tool?

This is something i have been thinking about a lot lately, and to be honest its a bit worrying. I fear a future where tech companies will be used as political tools on behalf of their government in order to put pressure on individuals or even countries.

For example, is it technically possible for a tech company, lets say Microsoft to activate some sort of kill switch that would remotely lock down every PC running Windows in a certain country?

Lets imagine that some country gets in a political dispute with the USA, and the politicians decide to shut down every PC and smartphone in that country as a reprisal, is such a scenario realistic? And has this already been done in some parts of the world?

And what about China and Huawei, can they do the same if political tensions with the west escalate?
