Hello all, hoping I can get a bit of advice here on what I should be doing next in my career, and this seemed like a great place to ask.
Was a high school science teacher, transitioned into a IT support/help desk position, along with online classes for a Bachelor’s in CyberSec.
2 and 1/2 years at 1 job. Moved to another company, help desk for a year there.
Wrapped up my CyberSec degree, and around the same time was promoted to a SysAdmin position at the 2nd company.
Have been in the SysAdmin role for about a year now. Working closely with a mentor at the company, and I’ve been pretty hands on in system maintenance, moving the company’s application into Docker, re-tooling/redesigning the infrastructure to facilitate automated scaling, etc.
Here are my questions:
How long should I realistically remain in the SysAdmin role to build out my resume? I am still learning a ton, and enjoying the job, but it is definitely not the role I want to end my career in. I’m just not sure what is a reasonable timeline here.
Is a CompTIA CySA+ cert worth getting, to facilitate transitioning from sysadmin into a more security focused role? If not, which certs should I be looking into? I am not really interested in RedTeam/Pentesting, definitely favor the blue team/defensive and infrastructure side of things.
Any and all advice is much appreciated! Thanks in advance.
