I am asking this question here as I’m not super tech savvy. I have an old mac (late 2008) and never had any issues with viruses/malware that I know of. I regularly run anti virus scans with Malware Bytes and Avast and have never had anything. I ran a deep scan with Avast yesterday however and it found an infected file called ‘background.js’ buried in my Chrome extension files. It said the threat name was called ‘Other:Malware-gen[tr]’. After uploading it to Virustotal many other engines caught this as well and it seemed to primarily to come up in other AV as a type of adware. Malware Bytes did not catch this file however.
My main question I hope to be answered is if this is something I need to worry about and conduct further security checks on my mac, or now that it’s quarantined everything should be fine. The other thing is, I almost never use chrome since I pretty much exclusively use brave, so since I wasn’t browsing on chrome does that also mean it was probably just an auto-update of an extension that had malware in it? As I said before I’m not sure what kind of damage this could have done on my computer and am hoping to get that cleared up. Thanks for any answers.
