Coming from a Comp Sci Grad, what kind of projects/direction should new/incoming grads do to add on to their resume?

Sorry if the title sounds a bit sketch. I (CompSci Grad) am trying to help out a friend (CyberSecurity), but it is hard to ask them questions because, like me, they have no body to ask for help and they too are asking the same questions. I remember before ‘figuring it out’ it was a matter of asking the right questions and perusing concepts (not technologies).

I am wondering what can Cyber Security grads do to add on to their resume. E.g. for me, I wanted to be a full stack developer, with emphasis in backend, so I picked up Flutter for front end, and I picked up Springboot for backend and used OpenApi to develop my endpoints and it was just a matter of writing up both ends. However, before reaching this point, I made the mistake of chasing technologies, so I read one job post say React Native (so I learned a bit of RN), I saw another post say Angular (so I learned a bit of that), similarly for backend. However, it occurred to me after about 6 months of chasing ghosts that I was becoming a jack of all trades, a master of none.

So I stuck with Flutter, but I learned at a deeper level about front end development, and my interviews just went a lot better, the further I stuck with one technology the further I got, and eventually landing a job. However, what improved in my interviews were my conversations about these concepts.

TLDR:

So for Cyber Security, what is it that new grads should learn and how is learning this tech connected to a concept or facet in Cyber Security? I know one thing is Certifications, but they are expensive, so it becomes a matter of what is the best bang for your buck, and the question again is for what(as in what does paradigm is this related to, so if I take another cert it doesn’t overlap) ?

E.g. if someone wanted to learn Front End, I would recommend **A** framework React, Vue, Flutter etc. etc.(also based on what kind of FE) . Then get comfortable with that framework, focus on **A** state Management strategies like (BloC) ,focus on **A** design patterns (like MVC), etc etc.

In a general sense: work on version control and writing cleaning code.

thank you for taking the time to read this post, and I am sorry if it was confusing, I am trying to retro fit my experience to my friend’s and I really just wanna help. I was thinking I can work on an app and they can help with unit tests because I remember them reading out that some job posts want unit testing, but this seems too CompSci-ish? Is this a project for them worth perusing?

thank you 🙏
