Hi, I’m new to this subreddit (sorry in advance if this is the wrong subreddit), but was wondering if you all might be able to provide some insight. I am interested in CyberSec (don’t know which area yet) and am trying to decide between going to two different colleges, CU Boulder (in-state option) or George Mason. I did participate in CyberPatriot during HS, but I worked on Cisco packet tracer and our coach didn’t know anything about it. So I didn’t learn a whole lot, the only option was to self-teach, and that wasn’t for me. Here are a few questions I have to try and help me make a decision:
1. GMU offers a Bachelor’s in Cybersecurity, CU only offers a Master’s in it. Is GMU’s bachelor’s worth it, or is it a gimmick? They claim to have a lot of connections for students since they are right outside DC.
2. Is a Master’s necessary/ preferable? If so, would it be better to get a Bachelor’s in CS, ECE, something else?
3. The difference in tuition is about 10k/yr (CU: 32k, GMU: 42k). Is GMU’s option for a Cybersec degree + connections worth +10k/yr? I know Cybersec is a pretty lucrative field, but is that too much of a price increase?
For the sake of the post, you can assume I know very little. (I can google how to do basic stuff in Windows/ Shell, Packet tracer, Linux/ Bash, know how to do Python & Java).
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
