Hi all,

I have a few questions. For reference, when I say firewall, I mean a physical, specialized hardware w/ licensing from a 3rd part – a Fortinet, Sonicwall, Sophos, etc.

First off, does a firewall do anything to protect against emails (assuming emails are on prem, not in the cloud like O365)? Or is it only protecting from incoming URLs? If it only protects against URLs, is it only sketchy sites that would have malware? Or is it dangerous going to traditional sites, like google, facebook, reddit, etc too? How is it protecting you more than just the standard firewall stuff in a normal router?

If it does protect against incoming email, to what extent? What does ESA do that a firewall doesn’t? Is an ESA important for business as well, or is it an unneccesary expense?

Email server should be behind the hardware firewall anyway.
