Does a browser hijacker have to be installed on the computer to do anything?

I believe I have had a browser hijacker in google chrome, however scanning with windows defender and Malwarebytes has not found anything.

At first when I searched something it would redirect to charmsearching . com and then to bing, that stopped but then whenever I search something first the real google searches would appear, then four or five searches from the same suspicious websites would appear.
I cleared my browser, cookie history and deleted some unneeded extensions and now this is no longer happening, but I don’t really feel in the clear. Does a browser hijacker have to be installed or could it be a cookie or some other web thing to have effect?
