Does military experience improve your CV?

Hello Reddit. I’m currently a senior analyst (incident handling and response), and have the opportunity to choose when to be conscripted (national laws). Due to my education level I would be a lieutenant for a year, most likely in the land or naval forces. Would this military background help my career? What are your experiences? I can postpone it, however I would rather do it soon if it would be a plus in my CV.

Generally speaking, your rank is not the job you do so the answer is “it depends”.

There are places around the world that look for military cyber experience specifically. Depending what you do in the military you can also learn other useful skills related to leadership, program management, project management, etc. Maybe even earn new certifications, or get exposure to new/old systems like operational technology (OT; ICS is a subset of OT) or platform IT (PIT) assuming you are in a cyber career field/specialization/or whatever your military calls it.

Personally, I would do it as early as possible so you can focus on your civilian career and not have that interrupted later. But there are plusses or minuses either way.
