[Repost of [my submission](https://www.reddit.com/r/computerviruses/comments/qs0yzy/freeaddoncom_pup/) in r/computerviruses]
My antivirus Malwarebytes marked an extension I use as a PUP. The extension, which comes from the Chrome Web Store and is provided by a site called “freeaddon,” is nothing more than a wallpaper extension that changes to a random wallpaper whenever you open a new tab. A few other widgets come with the extension too, such as a weather forecast feature and a clock.
I did a bit of research about the site since I was undeniably skeptical, and I found out that the extensions on the Chrome Web Store were bombarded with repetitive negative reviews presumably written by bots. Perhaps these comments could be the reason as to why Malwarebytes detected the extension as unreliable or potentially unwanted.
[\”don’t be stupid like me, don’t add this dire extension :(\”](https://preview.redd.it/knrlasmtk3z71.png?width=504&format=png&auto=webp&s=1df71883a0a1224f66083c8bb5a2879a7cfe8645)
[Some of the comments have very subtle differences, but are still eerily similar.](https://preview.redd.it/whie14zuk3z71.png?width=577&format=png&auto=webp&s=c4a9999f0c503bbd11a0bad8b3f654331a6aad98)
Furthermore, there are a few articles on the “freeaddon” website that directly state the issue. They seem to be the only ones on the internet that do so, however. If you ask me, the way they write it seems kind of suspicious – but I’m ultimately still unsure about it. Click at your own risk to view them:

Does anyone here have more information about this site? and if so, do you think they seem reliable? Could it really just be a false positive on Malwarebyte’s end?
An answer is very much appreciated, thank you!
