Okay… title says it…

I understand these certifications are expensive and if you have the opportunity to get them paid for, do it. With any certification of course you should do that.

But with these certifications being so expensive.. HOW much weight do they actually hold? Do they really help with getting other jobs or raises in salary? Do employers see these certifications and go “WOW!”?

Just curious…



It varies from company to company but I have seen a lot of job descriptions that list GIAC certs as “required”. I think it can help in salary negotiations because you can point to them and say “average salary for this certification is $100k”. Beyond that it is totally up to the individual making the hiring decision on how important certs are (and opinion varies greatly).

I will say regardless of how people or employers feel about the actual certifications, they are well worth the money. The knowledge I gained from these courses kicked off my Cybersecurity career. Some employers will go “wow” if they are familiar with SANS and the GIAC cert process.

Just the knowledge, tools, and techniques that I acquired were well worth it.
