Long story short, I use Windows Defender as my main AV/real time protection.
I like to have a second AV program that I just use for second opinions. If a file is suspicious, I’ll scan it with both Defender and the second scanner, just to further decrease the chances of something slipping by. If I suspect my PC to be infected, I’ll run full scans with both Defender, and the second scanner, for the same reason.
A lot of people recommend just uploading to virustotal, but this isn’t always ideal when it comes to large files, or scanning large groups of files. It’s also not at all ideal if I suspect my PC to be infected – as 1) They rely on uploading specific files, and 2) if I suspect I’m already infected, I like to kill any internet connection completely anyway, to stop any active trojans feeding information back to their source.
So it needs to be something that works without an internet connection, that can be used as just a scanner rather than for real-time protection, that has very good detection rates, and ideally has no nag screens or at least nothing that’ll bother me if I don’t have the app open outside of times when I’m scanning files.
In the past I used Malwarebytes but while researching the issue today I’ve come across a lot suggesting that its detection rates aren’t quite what they used to be.
Thanks a ton in advance! :)
