How can I protect my computer against viruses/malware from opening dozens of potentially infected USBs?

I am a TA and have been asked to collect and grade students’ projects which have to be submitted through USBs. I have heard most USBs carry viruses and college campuses are famous for spreading viruses anyway. What antivirus/anti malware should I install to protect myself?
