How can I start to be more cautions about

I new to the cyber security topic. So I was reading a lot of different post about that you shouldn’t do this and do that and I’m a little scared that my information (be IP address, passwords saved in chrome, websites that I visit, among other common stuff) will be in danger.

What I have to learn (basics to advanced) to be more cautious with my online privacy?

Thank you

First things first, you have to know privacy and security are two different things. I would explain the difference, but I am sure someone else does it better. Check out this link:

Secondly, you are worried about your saved passwords being stolen. I would suggest using a password manager such as LastPass, Bitwarden or KeePass. These managers store your passwords securely, while also being userfriendly.

While you’re at it, try to change all your existing passwords. I know LastPass has a password generator. Using a password generator you can create an unique password for every account.

You also state you’re worried about your IP address. I am not sure why you would have a reason to worry about this security wise, but I am not here to question you on that. You can use a service such as a VPN to hide your IP address. However, please keep in mind that a VPN comes with some cons. Firstly, a good VPN is not free. You may need to spend around 10 dollars monthly for a good service. Secondly, some websites have blocked the IP address of some VPN services, making a website inaccessible. Thirdly, you will get a lot of Captchas to prevent spam from the VPNs IP address, especially when using Google Search. Lastly, a VPN may slow down your internet connection.

An alternative to a VPN is using Tor, which is free. I don’t have much experience with that, but except for the payments the mentioned cons apply for Tor as well. It is a lot less user friendly though.

It is good that you want to secure your information. There are a lot of things that you can do that are pretty simple starting out. First, stop using Chrome. Google will absolutely sell the information it gets on you. Firefox is a lot more secure. Second, stop saving your passwords in your browser. While it is convenient for you, they are not protected. It is recommended to use a password manager such as LastPass or 1Password, etc. Third, goes with the previous. Do not reuse passwords on multiple sites. Make them all unique. The longer and stronger the better. If you use a password manager, it will create them for you and save them. Fourth, emails and DM’s. Do not click on links in emails or DM. This is a popular phishing platform. Finally, you need to be using an antivirus software. It can be Norton, MacAfee, Windows Defender, whatever. Now with that, you need to make sure to avoid sites that could be considered shady. Sites like torrent sites, porn sites, etc. Reason is that an antivirus program will certainly help keep your information secure however, it will not make it invincible. You play a big part in this and the more you learn about this, the better off you will be.
