How do hackers scan for open ports on a system not on their network?

Sorry for the noobish question, but I have been completing rooms in tryhackme.com and I always start by scanning the ip address I’m given with nmap. Given that the ip address can be linked to my network, nmap can easily scan it.
In a real life scenario how would a person scan open ports on a system that is not on their network?
