How do Mac’s built-in security systems, firewalls, MRT, Xprotect work? How does it notify you if it detects something?

I use Bitdefender, but I recently heard Mac has several built-in systems.

1) They don’t exactly have a “UI” the classic page of an antivirus where you configure settings and request quick/system scans, so does it run completely in the background, silently, is this right?

2) most importantly, if it does detect a threat does it notify you? I’ve never gotten a “you’re infected” or “suspicious item” notification from my mac, does it just deal with these things silently and without telling you? Where can I find logs of its activitty?

Or am I completely misunderstanding how it works?
