I’m fairly new to IT as I have been in and out of school for the past 4 years. I just quite my job as a Hydraulic Mechanic, making damn good money, and took a fat pay cut to get into IT because I am rather enthralled with Cyber Security and Networking.
So! I’m one of those people that now “eat, sleep and breathe” my current obsession. I fix chrome books for school districts all day at my job while listening to podcasts about cyber security and the tech industry in general. I come home and flip my laptop open and fire up TryHackMe, Range Force, my Ethical Hacking Udemy or Professor Messers Sec+ videos. Then I eat and read my Darril Gibson Sec+ book for an hour or so.
After all of this, for a couple months now, I’m realizing just how vast the array of job descriptions, titles and responsibilities can be.
My question: How the FUCK so you settle on what you’d like to focus on?!
I LOVE the idea of penetration testing and love learning the tools, but I also know that’s the most difficult place to start. I love the idea of being in incident response, defending the company I work for and I really like the idea of forensics. But have no idea how to really narrow down what I should focus most of my attention on.
So I’m curious how some of you settled in to what you do or choose to do.
Thanks so much for your time, I appreciate all the help this sub lends.
