How important is SIEM experience when applying to Tier 1/Junior SOC analyst jobs?

Title says it all, but I’m currently a cybersecurity student with a degree in IT. I have no professional experience, but I have a lot of networking knowledge. I do plan on getting my Security+ cert very soon, but not having professional experience is killing me. Is simply downloading a SIEM and playing around with it good enough, or are there any training sessions for this online I can/should do?

Experience means work experience. Most HR departments won’t accept “screwed around with a home lab” as a replacement for 40 hour a week experience.

Homelabs are great to learn, but you should keep applying to entry level IT jobs. You’re not likely to get a CyberSecurity job without IT experience.
