How To Deal With a CyberThreat/Blackmail?

So short story, short. My fiancé just got an email from someone claiming to have hacked her computer and Webcam and recorded her “looking at certain videos and doing certain things” and this would be released to all of her contacts if they didnt receive Bitcoin. Now, normally we would just ignore this, as my own paranoia has led me to taping up all of our Webcams, so obviously this threat is false. BUT they had one of the passwords for some social media or website that she’s recognized as being hers (but she doesn’t remember where to). What actions should we take to 1) attempt to close the breach and 2) handle this already present blackmail attempt

> BUT they had one of the passwords for some social media or website that she’s recognized as being hers

That’s the whole schtick.

One password was compromised, and they’re trying to make it seem like more.

She should ignore the threat (which is false), change all her passwords, and implement MFA wherever available.

This is a pretty generic threat email. I’ve never seen one actually be legit.

They typically use stolen passwords in the email that they find in data dumps from compromised websites to make you think they have gained access.

I doubt you guys have anything to worry about.

For the password enter the email into [https://haveibeenpwned.com/](https://haveibeenpwned.com/) which should tell you the account and website compromised.

As for the e-mail ignore it. They usually send it out to leaked e-mail/password lists and add the password to increase chances that you think you have been pwned.

Hope this helps! :)

Everyones answered so quickly! I appreciate all the response. I figured it was a pretty general threat, but I’m no cyber security expert. Thank you all and if there’s any other tips, please share!
