I am a cybersec student currently and my professors, textbooks, and professionals tell me my systems and networks (including home networks) need some sort of third party anti-malware software. Specifically, a professional in the field i had the chance of hearing speak says to even stay away from popular store-bought anti viruses such as Norton and McAfee. I’ve heard bitdefender is good and also malwarebytes. I’ve always used Defender, and never had problems, but learning more about Cybersecurity, I think I should invest in a good anti-malware program over Defender. What do the professionals in this community think?

Personally, I think Windows Defender became even better than most of the AV products out there the last few years. Mainly because of the sandboxing of viruses before executing them. Which a huge plus.

Not sure where you are getting told windows defender is bad.

Windows defender is my top recommendation for all home users. Even small business it’s probably ok alone. The enterprise version for the rest of small-large businesses.

What you really want is a multi-layered defense. Windows defender with some form of detection/prevention (ids/ips).

Listen to people you know, trust, and value over anything you read on the internet. The internet was overtaken by corporate capitalism over a decade ago. People you know in real life don’t only see you as a means to make money (and if they do, you should probably try to meet better people). Godspeed.

Sounds like someone that’s been out of industry for a while. Defender for Endpoint is one of the leading solutions.
