I currently work a help desk role and I am looking to get a position as a Security analyst, SOC analyst or production support analyst. While my current position isn’t that bad, I wish to move towards a security role. I’ve watched a number of videos on how to do this and what certifications I should get and in the last 7 months, I have gotten the Security+, the network+ and the ec council CSA. I intend to get the CEH as well. I learnt python and powershell scripting. I’m not the best at scripting but I will say my understanding is at an intermediate level. I am still a student working towards a major in electrical engineering and a minor in computer engineering. I started college about 6 months ago and I’m one semester away from getting an associates in engineering at my local community college.
Everything falls apart however when I’m building a resume. I know I didn’t have the relevant experience as a security analyst so I built a training lab using virtual machines to learn how to configure firewalls, IDS/IPS solutions such as snort, SIEM tools like splunk, packet analyzers such as wireshark and also learning various operating systems. How do I convey this information on a resume? How do I make myself more appealing to recruiters and hiring managers?
