Internet security and antivirus suggestions?

Work laptop arrives today. Sure, those listed below are all common programs as are Bitdefender, Kaspersky, Norton and others.

1. McAfee: already have this subscription on home computer. Worked fine for 5+ years
2. Malware Bytes 4.0 Premium: $29.99 after $10 discount
3. Trend Micro (Premium, Maximum, Ultimate, ???): $19.99 for one year. Used this before
4. Webroot (internet security with antivirus): free for six months with laptop purchase
5. Microsoft Office 365 probably still has internet security and antivirus.

I’m a Bitfefender guy, mostly due to me using their Box firewall so their AV comes with the subscription. Used to Kaspersky. Happy with the switch.

When you say work laptop, do you mean a laptop you bought yourself for work or your employer is giving you a device to use? If your employer is giving you a device, it should contain your employer’s antivirus and you may need permission to install software.

Also, don’t judge Windows Defender. It’s free and compared to a few years ago, it’s very, very good. I would argue that Microsoft Security is on par with other AV companies in 2020/2021. The only difference is that you don’t get all those fancy (unnecessary) tools such as software boot manager and disk cleaners. If Windows Defender meets your needs, I would stick with that and save you money. For 75% or more people, WIndows Defender is plenty. As long as you know and practice common security practices such as not clicking on random links or downloading unknown software, Defender will fit your needs.
