Is free antivirus software good?

Getting a new laptop soon and I am wondering what anti-virus software to use. My buddy recommends using Avast, and says it’s just as good as the others and it’s free.

I definitely want something that will protect my computer, but of course I don’t want to pay a lot if I don’t have to.

Any recommendations or brands to look into?

Avast has lost the little reputation they had left after being caught selling user data to third parties and spying on users using their extension and browser last year.

If you want to protect yourself, then using common sense is by far the most important thing you should do, when 94% of all malware comes from email its rather simple to avoid most malicious code.

Of course, an antivirus is meant as an last line of defence, incase the human brain fails to recognize danger, if you want automation, Bitdefender Free, if you want user control and customization, Kaspersky, or just stick to Windows Defender, you can bring it to par with other AV’s by using the tool ConfigureDefender, I made a post on it here
