Is SSH Tunneling to my Personal Computer Safe?

I have a nice pc. I do not have a nice laptop.

I am going to graduate school, and I need to have a portable computer that can also do some computations (training machine learning algorithms in case you’re curious).

I thought it would be a good idea to pick up a really light, cheap laptop, put Linux onto it, and ssh into my home computer from campus over the internet for heavy lifting.

Is this safe? Obviously my port will likely be discovered, but is the probability I get hacked very high? (I use very secure passwords)

It’s as safe as either endpoint is. SSH means you’re not likely to have your connection or credentials sniffed over the wire, but if either endpoint’s credentials are compromised, the other can be.
