So I’m looking at an opportunity to jump from an engineering up to architecture role in infosec. This is a bit of a green role for our department so I’ll have some opportunities to define my duties with the team and my management.
I was just looking to hear from others who have made this transition and what your experiences were so I have a better idea of the accuracy of my expectations:
* Did you find your exposure did in fact increase (more meetings, higher level recipients, etc.?)
* Did your actual workload/time demands increase (either due to literally more work, or simply because you found yourself setting your own bar for effort higher?)
* Did you feel it had a negative/positive impact on your career or infosec interests in general? Family life? Mental state?
* If you could go back to a prior role that made less money but maybe also had less demands (Engineer, Analyst…) would you?
We don’t need the increased income, and my work/life balance right now (especially with COVID-driven remote work) is pretty great so I just want to make sure I’m not trading in a well-paying role with less exposure (and thus less demands) for a better paying/more prestigious role that’s going to grind me down with exhaustive demands and unreasonable expectations. Thanks!
