For my Computer and Information Systems paper, I have chosen the subject of malware, ransomware, and hacking. I want to use a malware that infected my computer when I was in middle school that scared the crap out of me (I didn’t know much about computers, and it was a laptop my grandmother gave me that she used. She opens random emails and clicks on random links. She also gets her personal and bank information was stolen regularly, despite my family’s efforts of trying to have her learn computer safety).
From what I remember, the laptop came with the full version of Macfee, and one day the laptop could not connect to the internet. A program disguised as Windows kept saying that I had a problem with “Win32 bit defense system” or something like that. Each time I opened a browser, it would be blank and keep popping up a window for me to buy antivirus software that said was the only solution. This happened for almost a week and a half until Macfee found a backdoor and trojan but they were all the same name. I had no problem afterward with it and never heard of anything like it afterward.
I’m not sure if it’s generic malware and would like to include it in my paper because it was well made and my only experience with a type of ransomware.
Does it sound familiar to anyone?
