New here and looking for some advice.

Hey guys, i’m a 20 year old looking to get into cyber security. Technology has always peaked and interest in me and i’ve decided this is the route i want to take. I haven’t gone to college yet and i’m wondering what i should get a degree in. What do companies look for in a cyber security analyst? What should i learn outside of college? Any tips on where i could get certifications?
Thank you in advance for your help!

Security is a big field so what you’re interested in could change what your path. If you’re interested in penetration testing you could potentially skip a degree and study for the OSCP. If you’re interested in application security start to learn coding. If you want to be blue team/SOC/analysis learn about detecting malicious activity, active directory, networking, antivirus, etc. If you’re not sure what you’re interested in yet start learning a bit of everything until you get an idea of what piques your interest.

Perspective from someone somewhat new to the industry, 3 years. My path was: community college for development > community college for security > lots of self study > internship > still lots of self study > full time
