I need to know how paranoid I’m being. I’ve been avoiding companies owned by Tencent because it feels like giving personal information to a Chinese based tech company seems risky. I know that China has implemented some pretty extreme surveillance measures. However, I’m having a hard time finding specifics about how Chinese law works with these tech companies regarding data security. Can the Chinese government just ask these Chinese tech companies to turn over their data in the name of surveillance or am I being too “Old Man Yells At Cloud” about this?
I know that most tech companies in the US sell user data to advertisers. My concern is providing data to a foreign government with extreme surveillance policies, especially during a time where China and the US have an antagonistic relationship. I am looking to be educated on the matter.
