Ransomware: Should paying hacker ransoms be illegal?
It is in some cases. If the attacker is on a terrorist list, it is illegal in the US to pay the ransom. But the answer is much, much more complicated than that. It is also illegal (and there are hefty fines for) releasing customer or patient data, making it cheaper to pay ransom to keep the data ‘safe’. Some attackers are not ‘trustworthy’, so never worth paying.
Avanan hosted a really great interview with a ‘ransomware cybersecurity lawyer’ last year. Really, really interesting: [https://www.avanan.com/resources/webinars/on-demand/ransomware-legal-response](https://www.avanan.com/resources/webinars/on-demand/ransomware-legal-response)
