Hello everyone,

I am upgrading my home network, and switching from the isp-provided router (which isn’t the most secure), to a solid one. Unfortunately, I am having a hard time picking a router, because i don’t really know what to look for.
I am also planning to run a pi-hole on the network. Easy support for it or similar, built-in functionality is a nice to have.
I am running an internet-facing Nextcloud server, which i plan on accessing through a VPN in the future. Hence built-in VPN functionality on the router would also be cool.
TL;DR
I need a new, secure router. What features should i look for and what should i avoid?
Pfsense OS on a Netgate is good.
The thing is, most consumer grade routers are garbage, enterprise level are expensive and can be considerably harder to configure…
Have you pondered something like a dd-wrt or OpenWrt setup, where you buy a cheap router and flash it with an open firmware that keeps getting updated long after the vendor wants to retire the model?
