Should I get a job in IT first??

I’m looking to get a job as a cybersecurity technician, analysist, and maybe eventually a engineer. Even the most entry level jobs require a few years experience. Do you think it is worth it to start with an entry level job in IT as I am collecting certifications, or would things like at-home labs and hands-on learning be enough experience to land a job?

Thank you guys this sub has been a blessing.

I have a preference for hiring junior analysts who start doing general IT work. Most people I’ve worked with who start out as auditors or some other security-centric discipline tend to be really really bad at turning concepts into workable actions and outcomes. There’s a huge benefit in learning how operations work “from the front lines” before hopping into a security role and trying to explain to those same people how they can do better.

Being able to tie that operational knowledge right back into a security mindset is huge too, and things like home labs, shadowing, or certs help to show an interest or focus in it. There has to be a balance though, because a giant alphabet soup of shotgunned certs can actually be more of a red flag than a few carefully chosen ones sometimes.
