I am trying to break into the cyber security field and I see soc analyst jobs come up a lot. I always see it’s a 24×7 hour job. I’m assuming you’re on call all the time. What are peoples thoughts on this position? Is this job worth it? Will I gain necessary experience to get into other security related jobs? Do you enjoy it? Pros and cons? Any info will be helpful. Thank you.
SOC positions require 24×7 coverage, but that means it’s shift work (i.e. some people will be working overnights).
It may have oncall as well, but I somewhat doubt it. If you are oncall, you will be oncall as part of rotations – I’m starting my oncall shift in an hour and will be the “holy shit everything’s on fire” guy for the next 96 hours, but unless everything’s on fire, nobody will bother me.
SOC is good intro experience. It’s a grind (lots of alerts to deal with; can get repetitive), but it will expose you to a lot of tech in an enterprise environment and put you on the front lines. Lots of folks start in SOC and move up.
It depends, Im not completely sure but it could be on call but it could mean 24/7 split surveillance shared with another set of Soc analyst in another time zone.
Or even 11-7am shifts like a data center.
