So I’m an IT guy with 25+ years of experience. My background includes being a senior tech, system admin, it manager, systems engineer, operations analyst. I spent about 8 years overseas working for the military as an IT contractor at places like Kwajalein Atoll, Camp Victory Iraq, Camp Eggers Afghanistan, and of course Camp Lemonnier Djibouti. Then I spent the last 9 years working as an IT manager for a small company in Houston. While there I also had to learn, implement and manage a lot of security that they were lacking.
Well for my 50th birthday this year I got a pink slip. Covid had hit the company pretty hard and it got sold and the new owner removed all management. I freely admit I spent the first month enjoying the fact that I could sleep in, grow a beard and play with my dogs whenever I wanted. Boredom quickly set in though so I decided to get back at it. I updated my resume and after a solid month of getting lots of “No thanks” I took a hard look at my skill set and realized that my last major certification was MCITP Enterprise Administrator from 2010, and that I was thoroughly outdated!
After spending some time researching I decided to make the switch to Cybersecurity. I’m a disabled Veteran with bad knees and a bad back and the idea of working from home sounded good to me! And I had learned quite a lot already from my time overseas. So I purchased some CISSP study material, dived in and passed my test 2 weeks ago.
Now is where I need some help. While I have my CISSP (and my Sec+ from back in the day), I’m not really sure what sort of jobs I should start look at in Cybersecurity. I know what direction I want to take, as a very technical person I’m very interested in getting my Certified Ethical Hacker. So I’ve updated my home lab, loaded Kali Linux on an old laptop and am taking Udemy courses on Pentesting, python, bash and bash scripting etc.
So there is my dilemma, what am I qualified to be right now? And am I going down the right path as a CEH? My payscale in the past has been in the 125K range, and I’d like to stay there or higher. Which job type will get me there?
I truly, truly appreciate any suggestions, ideas and input.
