Tell me about soft skills and hard skills
Hard skills are when they want to hire you.
Soft skills are what you are missing which is why they didn’t hire you .
Communication, can you explain a complex thing in simple terms, can you say I don’t know, what are your responses to difficulty situation or unknown, how to communicate security related goals/policy
It doesn’t have to be infosec specific (though that often gets the interview…), but you should be able to relate your experience to the job you’re applying for.
I’ve had more security hiring managers light up/doors open when I’ve talked about a project I worked on at a *help desk* than anything else. That project? I wrote canned responses to the frequently asked questions. When that was done, I used that FAQ as the foundation to write the user manual.
Then used that as my guide when training users and admins on their shiny new software.
Whatever you can do to show that you know documentation and training is gold.
I have an ex-cop friend that is done with police work and looking for a new career. He has no college degree and thinks it’s a waste of time to apply for most jobs. His documentation experience alone would likely get him in for an interview in many infosec jobs.
