What is the recommended approach for someone to start in cybersecurity with a non-related degree?

I am looking to start a career change. I have some self-taught computer experience with python programming, Linux, VMs, and repairs etc. However, I don’t believe I have nearly the qualifications to start applying for positions. I do have a degree but no formal cybersecurity training or certifications.

What would be the best option? Should I pursue a cybersecurity degree/diploma along with certifications? Should I just start focusing on certifications?

I would assume the recommended path is to obtain enough training to break into the field and from there gain experience and continue learning. The question I have though is what level of training is necessary to start gaining experience?
