Who is tampering with our accounts?

(Quick note, I apologize if I don’t format this correctly this is my first post here. It seems to follow the guidelines of technicality so I’m going through with it.)

I was at a family gathering not long ago and the house owners discovered that someone was downloading torrents on the wifi. I don’t know much about torrents but I know they give the user access to personal things like emails. Since leaving, my parents have had about 4 of their accounts tampered with or had attempted breaches. They’ve started to reset their passwords on those accounts and more, in addition to adding two factor authentication.

My questions are these:
1. Can we assume the person downloading the torrents was someone in the house? (there were a lot of us)
2. Can we assume that the same person (or whoever originally downloaded the torrents) is the one currently still tampering with our accounts and information?

We have suspected family members, but I don’t know much, as i said, and I’m curious to know if 3rd parties can be in play. This is not for personal family issues or revenge, but to know how to keep our information safe. Thanks.

>I don’t know much about torrents but I know they give the user access to personal things like emails.

This is not correct. Torrents are used for *intentional* file sharing – ex. distributing files. Sometimes pirated content, such as movies.

>They’ve started to reset their passwords on those accounts and more, in addition to adding two factor authentication.

Good.

>Can we assume the person downloading the torrents was someone in the house? (there were a lot of us)

Probably yes. Kids downloading movies and stuff, as above. Change the WiFi password if the issue persists.

>Can we assume that the same person (or whoever originally downloaded the torrents) is the one currently still tampering with our accounts and information?

No, they’re not even remotely connected.
