Why are both passwords and their hashes (password + salt) stored in the database?

Why can’t we store just the hash itself?

Also, if a password + salt is hashed and then saved to the database the first time a user creates an account, when the user logs in, the hash of their password is compared against the hash of the password + salt in the database– how can the password inputted by the user ever match the hash in the database since it isn’t salted?
