Well here’s food for thought.
Both the RTX 3090 and RTX 3080 have the exact same GPU chip, the GA102. Sure the 3090 has more VRAM but the 3090 now costs twice as much as the 3080. The VRAM doesn’t cost that much and on some of these Board Partner cards the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 are the same. Same with the Core i3, i5, i7, and i9. They all use the same CPU that’s cut from the same silicon. Yeah It costs the same to make each but the i9 costs 3 times as much as the i3.
The reason these companies charge a premium is not only line the corporate coffers but also pay for future research and development. One of the reasons Intel has worked it’s way into the rabbit hole that it’s in is because they cut the funding to the R&D department that analyzed bad CPU wafers. Now their 10nm and 7nm process is failing and Intel is failing. The only reason Intel is selling anything is because there is a strong demand for processors and Intel has is still anchored in by reputation.
Cell phone manufactures operate the same way. They need to charge these high prices to pay for upcoming high priced products.
